Welcome to the realm of AL Only starterdom Edwin Jackson. The former top prospect for the Dodgers has started the year off pretty impressively, and today's 8 IP, 2 H, 6 K performance will certainly get him noticed. In pretty active leagues, he's already grabbed if he wasn't already owned. If he's out there, go get him. He's only 24 (seems like he's been around forever) so it's entirely possible he's figuring it all out. I think a 4.5 ERA and 160-180 Ks is definitely within reason, and those estimates might be conservative.
Rays 7, M's 0
Jonny Gomes continues to hit when given the chance. Really this was the best thing that could have happened for Gomes. It's early enough in the year that he could parlay this into regular play time. He's good for at least the next month. Eric Hinskie was hitting in the 5 slot, and he should probably see pretty regular time while Floyd is out too, he's probably worth a short term pick up. He's not 3B eligible, although he started there today, but he can play the outfield or 1B, so he has some options. It looks like the only value Miguel Batista will have this year is if he closes again. I'd stay away.
Rangers 3, O's 1 (1st Game)
Kevin Millwood is strong again, although the 2/5 K/BB is concerning. He has the Angels next, and I'd consider sitting him if you have a better matchup somewhere. But he's done nothing so far this year to think he's going to blow up. Steve Trachsel (?!?) was solid, but once again, I can't recommend him. Also of note, is Adam Jones hit leadoff as Roberts was given a rest. Although this didn't mean much now, since it's Robert's job as long as he's on the team, as soon as he's out (think July 31), the leadoff spot is most likely Jones'. Something to keep in the back of your mind if you are a Jones owner.
Red Sox 12, Tigers 6
End of the win streak. The Tigers' offense has come alive a litte (not the aching Miggy C), but the pen was awful again. JD Drew is on a mission to prove he can still get injured and dissapoint people. He's been pretty strong this year, and I think he can keep it up. He's always had the talent. Day 2 of the official Ortiz Watch doesn't look good. 0-3 with 2 strikeouts should lead to some stories about what's going on with him. Mike Lowell is placed on the DL, meaning Youkilis moves to 3B and Sean Casey gets the nod at 1B. Avoid Casey, but Youkilis could pick up 3B eligibility, which can only help his value.
A's 3, Jays 2
My well-known man crush Shaun Marcum throws another gem, but he was matched by my new potential man crush Dana Eveland. It's been pointed out that Eveland doesn't have great K numbers, and the number in the majors so far is expected to drop, but everything else about his minors stats are encouraging. Add him. Keith Foulke picked up the save, although giving up a run, but I'm willing to get it won't be the last one for him this year.
Rangers 5, A's 4
Oh man, I have to write more about the Rangers and A's? Let's make this one quick. I hate Adam Loewen. However, I like Kason Gabbard. He's next on my watch list I think. Feel free to add him. Also of note is CJ Wilson picked up in the save in both games. He was expected to be among the first AL closers to lose his job, but the Rangers seem confident in him and he hasn't done anything to show signs of failing. His job is safe for now. Also of note is Jason Botts is alive.
Yankees 6, Royals 1
Andy Pettitte was much better out this time, and I like him for this year. Against the lefty Bale, the Yanks shuffled up their lineup a little, hitting Posada, who was DHing with the bum shoulder at the 4 spot, bumping ARod up to 3, moving Abreu to the bench, and putting Morgan Ensberg in at 1B. A couple things here. Posada hit a bomb, so his shoulder doesn't seem to be effecting his hitting and he's pretty assured he's not going on the DL now, so a relief for Posada owners. If they'll DH him, his injury could actually help him. Also, anything to get Giambi out of the lineup is a good thing, and Ensberg goes 2-4. If you want a deep sleeper, Morgan Ensberg could be you're guy. Mark Tehan continues to hit, as he goes 3-4. Keep you're eye on him. And in some sort of old timers tribute to 1995, Hideo Nomo threw a couple of innings.
